The 2004 Research Agreement between Georgia Tech and Cingular, allows for the use of cellular devices, and cellular voice and data network usage (provisioned SIMS) on a fixed number of devices in support of research at Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech is responsible for the assessment, allocation, and administration of all devices and SIMS under the agreement. This site contains information and applications for research studies which will utilize the devices and SIMS made available under the agreement.
This project will collect data about cellular device usage (primarily using the GSM/GPRS/UMTS communication protocols). These devices will be compatible with the cellular infrastructure deployed on the Georgia Tech campus, which will allow for voice calls, text messaging, and data applications. The purpose of this data collection will focus on, but not be limited to, the mobility patterns of up to 300 participants, and any correlations between these patterns and the type and quantity of communications services used. To accomplish this, we will be collecting location and movement information, and voice and data session information. At this time we have no intention of monitoring voice conversations or data content; participants will be notified in advance of any change in this intention. A complete service list, including the cost and terms of any services which could incur charges, will be provided to each participant when the SIMs are allocated.
